Authorities Investigate Massive '8647' Marking Found on National Mall Grounds
Federal authorities are investigating a large "8647" marking that appeared on the grounds of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., near the World War II Memorial and within view of the Washington Monument. The marking was visible in the grass and appeared to have been created through discoloration that caused portions of the lawn to turn brown.
A Reuters photographer observed the formation from atop the Washington Monument before law enforcement officials arrived at the scene. While the numbers "8," "6" and "7" were clearly visible, the "4" appeared less defined. The discovery immediately attracted attention because of the phrase's political associations and because the National Mall is one of the country's most closely watched public spaces.
Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or determined how the marking was created. Investigators collected samples from the affected grass and said testing is underway as part of an ongoing inquiry into the incident.
Officials Describe Incident as Serious Vandalism
The U.S. Department of the Interior condemned the act and described it as "deranged vandalism" while emphasizing that any potential threat directed toward the president would be taken seriously. U.S. Park Police and members of the National Guard responded to the location after reports of the marking surfaced.
Authorities said the exact cause of the discoloration remains unknown. Investigators are examining whether chemicals or other methods may have been used to create the numbers in the grass. Officials stressed that the investigation remains active and that additional details would be released as evidence is analyzed.
The White House referred questions regarding the incident to the Department of the Interior. The event occurred as preparations continue for major celebrations connected to the 250th anniversary of American independence, which are expected to bring large crowds to the National Mall later this month.
Political Meaning of '8647' Draws Attention
The phrase "8647" has become a political slogan used by some critics of President Donald Trump. The number combines "86," a slang term often interpreted as meaning to remove or get rid of something, with "47," referring to Trump as the 47th president of the United States.
Supporters of the president and some Justice Department officials have argued that the phrase can be interpreted as a threat, while critics contend it is a form of political expression. The debate over its meaning has generated controversy in recent months.
The slogan gained additional national attention after former FBI Director James Comey faced federal charges connected to a social media image showing seashells arranged to display the same number sequence. Comey later removed the post and denied intending any threat. The appearance of the message on one of the nation's most recognizable public landmarks has therefore attracted heightened political and security scrutiny.
Investigation Continues Ahead of Major National Events
The National Mall is expected to host a series of major events in the coming weeks, including celebrations connected to America's 250th anniversary and the planned Great American State Fair. The timing of the incident has increased interest in the investigation.
President Trump has devoted significant attention to projects involving the National Mall and surrounding public spaces as part of preparations for the anniversary celebrations. Federal agencies have been working on restoration and improvement efforts throughout the area.
Law enforcement officials continue to examine evidence and determine whether the marking was intended as political vandalism, protest activity or something else entirely. No arrests have been announced. As investigators await laboratory results and additional evidence, the unusual appearance of "8647" on the National Mall remains one of the most closely watched political investigations in Washington this week.
