Right of Reply Policy

Fair reporting gives people and institutions a meaningful opportunity to answer consequential claims before publication.

Last reviewed: August 25, 2026

01

When we seek a response

Before publishing serious criticism, allegations of wrongdoing, or information likely to materially affect a person or organization, we make a reasonable effort to seek a response.

  • The subject is identifiable in the planned report.
  • The claim is substantive rather than incidental.
  • A response could add facts, context, or a meaningful denial.

02

Our outreach

Reporters describe the substance of the claims, identify a realistic deadline, and provide a reliable way to respond. Deadlines reflect the urgency of the story, the complexity of the questions, and publication needs.

  • We document outreach attempts.
  • We use known professional channels where possible.
  • We do not promise to publish a response verbatim or in full.

03

What a response should include

The most useful replies address the facts at issue and provide supporting records or knowledgeable contacts. Concise, on-the-record responses are easier to represent accurately.

  • Identify statements you dispute.
  • Explain the factual basis for the response.
  • Attach documentation when relevant.
  • State clearly if any portion is offered off the record.

04

Responses after publication

If a response arrives after publication, editors assess whether it adds material information. We may update, clarify, correct, or append the response, depending on its evidentiary value and relevance.

  • A late response does not automatically require a change.
  • New verified facts will be treated as new reporting.
  • Material updates will include an appropriate note.

05

What this policy does not guarantee

The right to reply is an opportunity to be heard, not editorial control. Subjects cannot approve headlines, choose the framing, demand removal of verified facts, or condition a response on unpublished editorial concessions.
